SV Werder Bremen is the largest sports club from the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and the fourteenth largest in Germany with 42,407 members. The club was founded in early February 1899 as the "Werder" football club from 1899. V. and SV Werder Bremen GmbH & Co KG aA, which is responsible for professional football, among other things. The club's name is derived from Stadtwerder on the Weser, where the club's first training and playing ground was located. The word Werder denotes a river island or the land washed up by a river, such as the Peterswerder, which is the site of Bremen's current Weser Stadium, where Werder Bremen's professional footballers play their home games.
