General

Villarreal Club de Fútbol, SAD (Valencian: Vila-real Club de Futbol, SAD), Villarreal CF for short or just Villarreal, is a professional football club based in Villarreal, in the province of Castellón in eastern Spain. The club plays in La Liga, the top division of Spanish football.

Founded in 1923, the club has spent much of its history in the lower divisions of Spanish football, rising to La Liga in 1998. In the 21st century, Villarreal gained some stability in the league, although they were relegated in 2012 but returned the next year and have remained in the top flight ever since. The club first appeared in the UEFA Champions League in 2005 and reached the semi-finals in 2006 and 2022, the club's best result. Villarreal also appeared in the UEFA Europa League during this period and won the competition in 2021 by beating Manchester United in the final to claim their first major title.

The club is nicknamed El Submarí Groguet or El Submarino Amarillo (Yellow Submarine) due to its yellow home kit and lower profile compared to Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and regional rivals Valencia. They play their home games at the Estadio de la Cerámica and are cited as an example of a small but successful club.
