General

Rayo Vallecano is a Spanish football club based in the Vallecas district of Madrid. The club was founded in 1924 and currently plays in the Primera División. The club has experienced many rises and falls over the past twenty years and is considered a typical "elevator team" in Spain. The club's biggest success was reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in the 2000/01 season.

In the 2012/13 season, Rayo Vallecano indirectly qualified for the Europa League because they finished 8th in the Spanish league the previous season and were supposed to move up to the Europa League instead of FC Málaga. Sixth-placed Málaga have been banned from European competitions for a season by UEFA. However, the Spanish football association RFEF refused the club admission to European competitions due to financial misconduct.

The club's fans are known for their clear political leanings. One of the fan groups is "Los Bukaneros", an anti-fascist group. Spanish punk band Ska-P also wrote one of the club's anthems called "Como un Rayo". Rayo Vallecano is often compared to German club FC St. Pauli.
