The first team of footballers was promoted to the Bundesliga in 1965 and won a total of five national championship titles, three DFB Cup wins and two UEFA Cup wins. In the all-time Bundesliga table, the club is in sixth place. The team became particularly well-known in the 1970s for their fast-paced and offensive style of play, with which they dominated the Bundesliga primarily with young players.
