The 1. Fußball- und Sportverein Mainz 05 eV (1. FSV Mainz 05 or simply called Mainz 05) is a registered sports club that was founded in 1905 in Mainz. In addition to the football department, whose first team plays in the Bundesliga, the club also has departments for handball, table tennis and fans. The first men's table tennis team has been playing in the Bundesliga since the 2022/23 season, and the women's handball team was represented in the Bundesliga from 2018 to 2020. In autumn 2022, the entire association had over 14,000 members.

The greatest sporting successes of the football department were the years in the top German division from 2004 to 2007 and since 2009, reaching the semi-finals of the DFB Cup in the 2008/09 season and sixth place in the table at the end of the 2015/16 season and thus the direct qualification for the group stage of the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League.

The business premises of the association are located on Isaac-Fulda-Allee in the Mainz-Gonsenheim district. Today's Mewa Arena in Mainz-Bretzenheim, which holds 33,305 spectators, has been used for the home games of the first team since July 2011. Previously, the Bruchweg Stadium was used, which is still used by youth teams.
