In the following years after the last championship in 1964, FC Bologna was mainly active in Serie A, but failed to win any more titles. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the club enjoyed a thriving spell under coach Francesco Guidolin, winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup twice and also reaching the UEFA Cup final in 1999, losing to FC Parma.

In recent years, FC Bologna has often been threatened with relegation, but thanks to a number of successful seasons in Serie A, they have always managed to stay up in the league. In the 2020/21 season, the club finished 12th in the league.

The home ground of Bologna FC, the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara, was opened in 1927 and has a capacity of around 36,500 spectators. Originally designed as an athletics stadium, it is also used for concerts and other events.
