General

Bayer 04 Leverkusen is a football company from Leverkusen in North Rhine-Westphalia, which was founded on April 1, 1999. The licensed player department of the gymnastics and sports club Bayer 04 Leverkusen e. V. was spun off and from then on managed by Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH. The team is known as the Werkself due to its close ties to Bayer AG.

Bayer 04 were promoted to the Bundesliga in 1979 and have played in Germany's top division since then without a break. Only FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are currently taking part in this competition for a longer period of time. The team has enjoyed several successes in the past, including winning the 1988 UEFA Cup, winning the 1993 DFB Cup and reaching the 2002 Champions League final.

However, the team is also attached to the image of the "eternal second" with the designation Vizekusen, as they achieved numerous second places in various competitions between 1997 and 2011, including five German runners-up championships. Nevertheless, Bayer 04 Leverkusen remains a fixture in German football.

Financial figures Bayer 04 Leverkusen

Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH was founded in 1999 by spinning off the licensed player department of the gymnastics and sports club Bayer 04 Leverkusen e. V. founded. The GmbH took over all shares in the club, which was made possible by an exception in the DFB statutes, since Bayer AG had previously sponsored the club for more than 20 years. As a result, Bayer AG was able to acquire the full majority of votes, contrary to the 50+1 rule.

Erste KWA Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bayer AG, is the shareholder of the GmbH. In accordance with Section 264 of the German Commercial Code (HGB), Erste KWA Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH does not publish the annual financial statements of Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH. Bayer AG provides the football GmbH with 25.2 million euros annually and also covers any losses in the annual balance sheet of the footballers. The football GmbH makes use of a corresponding passage in the Commercial Code and therefore does not show an annual balance sheet, so it is difficult to get numbers.
